The Faculty and Friends Reception held at the Calder Library on April 26th was a resounding success. Dr. Mary Moore, head of the Department of Health Informatics and Executive Director of the Calder Library, opened the event, saying that the reception came about at the request of the Medical School Council. Faculty had requested more opportunities to talk together and identify possible opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration. This was the third annual Faculty and Friends Reception. Dr. Moore announced that the theme for the event came the "Question of the Year" posed by Academic Medicine, the journal of the AAMC.  That question is: What improvements in medical education will lead to better health for individuals and populations?

She introduced Dean Pascal J. Goldschmidt, Senior Vice President for Medical Affairs and Dean of the Miller School of Medicine, who welcomed the group. Dean Goldschmidt highlighted the transition from procedural medicine in the 20th century to keeping people healthy in the 21st century. In this new landscape, Dean Goldschmidt noted, there are two types of doctors, those who use information tools and technologies effectively and those that wander aimlessly in the corridors. He acknowledged the Library, Dr. Moore, and Jackie Libretto for implementation of the University's electronic health record, UChart.

We are pleased to announce that UpToDate, a key information resource to support clinical care, is once again available.

You can access UpToDate (UTD) from the Calder Library homepage or from your browser while on the Intranet. UTD is available at the Miller School of Medicine, University of Miami Hospital, Jackson Health System (excluding Jackson North), Sylvester Cancer Center, the Regional Medical Campus in Palm Beach County and University of Miami health centers and clinics. It is not available remotely.

To see recent updates in UTD, click on “What’s New” at the top of the screen. Newer features include a drug interactions program and the ability to earn CME credit while using the resource. UTD has added more psychiatry and dermatology content, geriatrics and general surgery specialty resources will be available soon.

It is only because of the strong support of the Dean, the guidance of Medical Education, the advocacy of clinical faculty, residents, students and nurses, the flexibility of UTD, and extensive negotiation that the Miller School of Medicine was able to reinstate this valuable resource.

Creating a Customized PubMed Filter for Non-Indexed Articles

Below is a filter that you can add to your PubMed My NCBI account. With this filter, you can quickly look at only the non-indexed articles in PubMed. (The non-indexed articles are the new, “In Process” records that haven’t been indexed yet, the records sent in by the publisher and thus never indexed, and the old, non-indexed articles. These represent nearly 2 million articles.

Here’s when I use this option. There are only two limits that don’t eliminate the non-indexed articles—the publication date range and the language. If I still have too many irrelevant results, I might want to apply additional limits. So, I first look at the non-indexed articles by looking at my results in my filter (below) and selecting any of the articles I want to keep into my temporary Clipboard or permanent Collection. Then, I apply additional limits to my search. I will have eliminated the non-indexed articles from my results, but that is fine, as I have already looked through the non-indexed articles.
