NEW! UpToDate Graphics Search

UpToDate now offers the option of searching an extensive library of high-quality graphics, including more than 27,000 pictures, tables, illustrations, diagrams, graphs, algorithms and videos, without using a separate search engine. After entering the search term(s)—it can be a disease, symptom, laboratory abnormality, procedure, or drug; click on the Graphics link to quickly and easily search the database for graphics related to that topic. For example, in a search for “anemia,” results include a series of algorithms for treatment of anemia, pictures of anemia-induced skin conditions, pictures of blood smears, radiographs and angiographs, multiples graphs comparing treatments, tables of risk factors, practice guidelines, and useful information that will enhance the clinician’s ability to diagnose and treat patients. Graphics results are presented as thumbnails with titles (see below). Click on any thumbnail to enlarge the image. Once the image is enlarged, it can be sent by email, printed, or exported to MS PowerPoint (PPT), making this resource useful for enhancing instructional materials (when “Export” is selected the specific image is converted into a fully-referenced PPT slide). Each graphic also provides references and links to related topics of interest (look for “Appears in Topics”).
To learn more about conducting a Graphics Search, sharing information with patients or colleagues, and exporting graphics to a presentation, watch a short video tutorial that can be found at: www.uptodate.com/home/help-demo.
Please do not hesitate to contact a Reference Librarian at Calder Library for assistance with UpToDate. You may contact us by phone at 305-243-6648 or by email at .

The 12th Biennial Gross Lecture

The Louis Calder Memorial Library hosted the 12th Biennial Ralph H. and Ruth F. Gross Lecture on November 21, 2013. Featured speaker Bernd A. Wollschlaeger, M.D, a German-born Jewish physician, delivered his deeply personal perspective on the anatomy of hate. The son of a German tank commander who received the Iron Cross from Adolph Hitler personally, Dr. Wollschlaeger described his journey of emotional and spiritual struggle with the Nazi legacy of hate and the shadow it cast over his family and all of Germany. His desire to live a more meaningful life led to him converting to Judaism, immigrating to Israel, and serving in the Israel Defense Forces as a Medical Officer. He eventually moved to the United States to complete his medical training. Now practicing in Aventura, he is a Clinical Assistant Professor of Family Medicine at the University of Miami and Past President of the Dade County Medical Association and the Florida Society of Addiction Medicine. In 2012, Dr. Wollschlaeger was honored as the Family Doctor of the Year by the Florida Academy of Family Physicians.
“For me, hatred against other people has a very personal meaning,” said Dr. Wollschlaeger, speaking about the origins of hate and how we overcome it. “But I have learned that we all think in stereotypes, because our ancestors long ago had to put people in categories quickly in order to avoid danger. Today, that type of thinking can lead to hatred against Jews or Muslims, blacks or whites. As physicians, we have a moral responsibility to make a conscious effort to overcome our personal biases and treat everyone in an equal manner.”
Dr. Mary Moore, Librarian Professor and Chair of the Department of Health Informatics, welcomed the more than 150 attendees and thanked the Gross family members for their support. Patricia Bergman, one of the daughters of Ralph H. and Ruth F. Gross, recommended Dr. Wollschlaeger as this year’s speaker. She attended the event with her sister, Carol Clarkson. The Ralph H. and Ruth F. Gross endowment, made to the Calder Library by Mrs. Gross in memory of her husband, sponsors the event, which was hosted by the Department of Health Informatics, the Medical Faculty Council, Calder Library, and the Miller School’s Department of Family Medicine and Community Health.

NEW in UpToDate: Patient Information in Spanish

Great news for UM heath care personnel in clinics, hospitals, and office practices! The Library's UpToDate subscription now includes The Basics--patient information topics in English AND Spanish. The Basics component is comprised of short articles written in plain language, which answer some of the most frequent and important questions patients ask about medical problems. With this information, patients can gain a better understanding of their medical condition and treatment plan. The patient information topics are concordant with the professional topics upon which they are based in UpToDate. All topics are written by professional medical writers with advanced degrees, and then edited by the same in-house physician editors who develop the rigorously reviewed information that is included in UpToDate.
To access The Basics patient information in both English and Spanish, simply go to the Calder Library Website, click on e-Databases, then UpToDate. Click on the "patient info" tab and "The Basics" to view all the topics and click "View in Spanish" for the Spanish version.
Other diagnostic, point-of-care or consumer health databases accessible through Calder's Website with bilingual patient handouts include DynaMed and Health Library. Medline Plus, produced by the National Library of Medicine, offers patient care information in dozens of languages.
