Suzy BurrowsSuzetta Burrows, Director of Library Operations, has announced her intention to retire at the end of December this year. Suzy came to the Calder Library in 1980, working for Henry Lemkau as Associate Director for Media and Regional Programs.

Nurtured by her dedication, Calder health information outreach services have flourished over the past 30 years. Suzy founded the CLASSIC program for community hospitals, clinics and corporations, which was nationally acknowledged as a model in self-sustaining healthcare information outreach. CLASSIC continues to meet the information needs of thousands to this day, and has recently been extended to international clinics and hospitals.

Suzy served as co-PI on two major Calder Library Information grants, Point-of-Care, Team-Based Information System (POINTIS) and Southeast Florida AIDS Information Network. Most recently, as co-PI on a third National Library of Medicine award, she helped launch the Calder partnership with south Florida public librarians in support of the highly successful, medical student led, DOCS health fairs.

She guided the transformation from print to online collections at the Calder Library. By stewarding university resources through the years, continued access was maintained to the wealth of resources that are the foundation of the Calder Library. Her understanding of scholarly publishing and electronic access was acknowledged when she was named co-editor this year of a column for the Journal of Electronic Resources in Medical Libraries.

As a member of the Southern Chapter of the Medical Library Association, Suzy served as Chair of the Association, as well as chair of the Continuing Education Committee, Nominating Committee, Strategic Planning Committee, and co-chair of two Convention Committees for the annual meetings in Key Biscayne (1984) and Coral Gables (2003). Her mentoring of other librarians was twice recognized by the Southern Chapter.

Suzy also has been a member of the Medical Library Association (MLA) since 1969, serving as Chair of the Communications Committee, the Ida and George Eliot Award Jury, and the Medical School Library Section. She has been a Distinguished Member of the MLA’s Academy of Health Information Professionals since 1990.

Her professional expertise and service have left indelible marks on the Louis Calder Memorial Library. Although she will be enjoying a well deserved rest, Suzy has assured us that she will be available in the future to help document the contributions of others to the Miller School of Medicine through oral histories.

We hope you will join us when we will recognize Suzetta Burrows and her many accomplishments at the Spring Faculty and Friends reception at the Calder Library. Details will follow.

PubMed Central (PMC) is the digital repository of free articles from the National Library of Medicine. PMC includes the historical archives of some journals, as well as current research articles. All of the journals in PubMed Central are freely available to researchers and some are open access, which means they are available under a license which allows for more liberal distribution. You may have heard about PubMed Central when reading about the NIH Public Access Policy and the requirements for NIH-funded researchers. Read more about author manuscripts deposited by NIH-funded researchers, as well as see the list of journals available in PubMed Central. If you are interested in receiving updates when new journals are added, subscribe to the PMC News mailing list. Come celebrate with us!

MeSH

MeSH (Medical Subject Headings), created by the National Library of Medicine, has been the worldwide standard subject authority for bibliographic control for 50 years. MeSH terms and the capabilities their hierarchy permit made MEDLINE the first and, to this day, one of the most effective databases in the world. Join the Health Informatics Faculty and the Calder Memorial Library in celebrating its 50th Anniversary.

The National Library of Medicine’s celebratory broadcast will be received in the third floor electronic classroom on November 18, 2010 from 2:00-3:30pm. All are welcome to attend.

The speaker will be Dr. Robert M. Braude, who received his Masters of Library Science in 1964 from UCLA and attended MEDLARS training at the National Library of Medicine in 1965. His talk reflects his 45 professional years with MeSH. He received a Ph.D. from the University of Nebraska in 1987, he was director of three academic health science libraries, and he served on many NLM Committees and Panels such as IAMS Review Committees, the Planning Panels on Medical Informatics, NLM Outreach Programs, and the Biomedical Library Review Committee. He is a Fellow of the Medical Library Association and of the American College of Medical Informatics.

If you are interested in learning more about the history of MeSH, check out the first volume of MeSH, which the National Library of Medicine’s History of Medicine Division has scanned and placed online.

mobileMicromedex

You can access ISABEL on your iPhone, Blackberry, or Android phone. On your phone’s Internet browser, go to the library’s webpage, and click on ISABEL (one of the Featured E-Resources in the center of the page). If you get a "Cannot Verify Server Identity" message, click on the Continue button. You will be sent to the EZproxy login page; enter your name and library’s barcode as shown in this example. In the handheld version, you will have access to some of ISABEL’s powerful resources, but not all.  For example, the only e-book you will have access to is the excellent 5-Minute Clinical Consult, but not the other e-books.

In order to access the full content of Micromedex on your iPhone, Blackberry, or Android phone, you’ll need to get a username and password from Micromedex. First, access Micromedex from the library’s homepage, click on the blue MICROMEDEX 1.0 (Healthcare Series) button on the upper right, and then click on the gray Handheld PDA tab at the top towards the center/right. Scroll down to the mobileMicromedex 2.0 for iPhone/iPad, Blackberry, and Droid section. You’ll need to use the username and password given on this page. The username and password changes every 3 months (Jan., Apr., July, Sept.), so you’ll need to visit this link again in the future to get a new username and password.

Lastly, Micromedex also has a free app, but it only contains the drug information. From iTunes, search the App Store for the Micromedex Drug Information app.

As your Biomedical Research Librarian, I have created a portal for Genomics here at the University of Miami. This portal includes links to the Genetics and Bioinformatics resources at the University of Miami as well as links to different databases and tools at other institutions. I have included information about human and non-human genetics and information about gene therapy and stem cell research. We encourage feedback from the University of Miami community as we work to make this resource more comprehensive and complete.

Open Access is the free and immediate access of scholarly research information to everyone, through the Internet, giving the right to use and reuse those research results to anyone as needed.

Open Access Week is a worldwide event celebrated during the week of October 18 to the 24, to promote the unfettered “open access” of information for the advancement of scholarship and research, and for the benefit of academia, medicine, science, industry and the population at large.

This is the 4th year of the event which provides the academic and research community with the opportunity to keep current on open access initiatives and advancements made by open access policies around the world. Also, it gives academics and researchers the chance to share ideas and projects that demonstrate to the scientific community the importance and the benefits of open access to information.

Visit the Open Access Week site for information on planned activities and to connect with the worldwide Open Access Week community. You can also read a timeline of the last 10 years of Open Access Journals.
