√ AMA Manual of Style Online is now available at www.amamanualofstyle.com and under E-Books/Writer’s Tools on the Library’s web site. Containing the contents of the entire 10th ed, Oxford’s electronic version, launched in partnership with the AMA, also contains information, features and revision that will not appear in print until 2017.
√ Circulation Collection, a group of six Circulation-related monthly journals from the American Heart Association, is now available on the Library’s E-Journals: A-Z Link. These journals have both a clinical and research focus and have been frequently requested by faculty. They include Circulation: Arrhythmia and Electrophysiology, Circulation: Cardiovascular Genetics, Circulation: Cardiovascular Imaging, Circulation: Cardiovascular Interventions, Circulation, Cardiovascular Quality and Outcomes, and Circulation: Heart Failure.
√ The Calder Consumer Health Library database now includes high quality, 3D Procedure Animations from Nucleus Medical Art and 25 lifestyle HealthClips™ from Milner-Fenwick, a leading producer of health videos. √ Isabel, the diagnostic decision support tool trial at http://www.isabelhealthcare.com, was updated and enhanced with a new layout for entering clinical features and two new shorter displays of possible diagnoses in which the 10 most common diagnoses appear above the list of body systems. However, each display lets users view all diagnoses or body systems.
√ Natural Standard, the Library’s resource on evidence-based complementary and alternative medicine, added numerous Interactive Tools, including Symptom Checker, Interactions Checker, Calculators and many more at www.naturalstandard.com/tools.
√ NIH RePORTER (Research Portfolio Online Reporting Tool) at http://projectreporter.nih.gov/reporter.cfm replaced CRISP on September 9, 2009, but retains all CRISP features and adds many new capabilities and links to PubMed, PubMed Central, patent databases, etc.
√ Oxford Journals Archive makes the full text of 73 important health sciences journals, from Volume 1, Number 1, 1849-1995, accessible on the Library’s E-Journals: A-Z link.
√ USP-NF Online is available on the E-Databases link of the Library’s web site. The Pharmacopoeia helps you find information by product name, dosage form, chemical formula or by the way words sound.
√ WISER (Wireless Information System for Emergency Responders) now has an improved user interface for retrieving information on hazardous substances, comparing them and viewing multiple substances. WISER can be downloaded at http://wiser.nlm.nih.gov or accessed at http://webwiser.nlm.nih.gov.

Dear Reader,
This past Sunday the Calder Library promoted the consumer health website MedlinePlus at the South Dade Homestead Health Fair.
We had five people from the library staffing a booth next to the Registration and Check Out tables. We were able to distribute over 200 MedlinePlus pamphlets in Spanish, English, and Creole by individually talking with patients and promoting quality health information.
We also distributed MedlinePlus visors, pens, and hand sanitizers.
We even collected 14 surveys on patients' consumer health information habits and responses to the website. We're especially grateful to all those who made it a great fair!
Until next time,
The Caring Calder Librarians

On December 10th, the Calder Library hosted the 10th Biennial Gross Lecture.
[left to right: Carol Clarkson, Patricia Bergman (daughters of Ruth and Ralph Gross), Dean Pascal Goldschmidt, Dr. Roger Medel, Dr. Mary Moore]
The lecture, entitled "Medical Knowledge in the IT Era" was presented by Dr Pascal J. Goldschmidt, Senior Vice-President for Medical Affairs and Dean of the Miller School of Medicine and CEO of UHealth.
The lecture was introduced by Dr. Mary Moore, Professor and Chair of the Department of Medical Library and Biomedical Communciations, who provided a short history of the Gross Lecture.
She was then followed by Dr. Roger Medel (Board of Trustee and Chair, Medical Faculty Affairs Committee), who introduced Dean Goldschmidt, tying in both Dean Goldschmidt's interests and Dr. Moore's Gross Lecture history.
Dean Goldschmidt's presentation focused on the connection between medical services and technological evolutions, highlighting the importance of the upcoming electronic health record, Epic, which will be installed at the UHealth System starting next year.
He concluded by highlighting many of the library's resources which directly relate to increasing quality of patient care. The lecture finished with a presentation of a gift from the Calder Library and an invitation to the reception, complete with hors d'oeuvres and holiday treats. Dean Goldschmidt's overview was supplemented during the reception by Calder Library faculty, each providing in-depth demonstrations of a strong collection of electronic resources.
The lecture was a resounding success, with over 150 people in attendance and many people staying until 7 pm, enjoying delicious refreshments and stimulating conversation.
Here's to future collaborations between the Calder Library and health care providers in this new era of patient care!

PubMed Redesign

PubMed launched a redesign of their website this month. The PubMed homepage was streamlined, requiring less effort to find resources. If you’re looking for your favorite tool and it seems hard to find, follow the Advanced Search link. The old PubMed divisions “Details” and “History” were relocated to the “Advanced Search” area. Advanced Search is also where you can locate a particular article with “Single Citation Matcher.”
The newly added features include the ability to search for “Electronic Health Records” under the section now called “Topic-Specific Queries” (formerly “Special Queries”), which enables PubMed to search for “Electronic Health Records” information as a subject term and as a keyword term. This includes implementation, attitudes, beliefs about EHRs, data privacy issues, health data statistics and consumer health access to personal health records.
These are some of the highlights from the new redesign. We know this will require some transition time for all who are familiar with the old PubMed. As always, the library offers monthly PubMed classes (click here to register for a class) and reference librarians are available to answer any questions you may have (contact us at or 305-243-6648).

Finding Biomedical Collaborators and Mentors at UM and Beyond with Collexis
“Loved this system!!!! Thanks!” -Enthusiastic Department Head
The Office of Research, the Calder Library, and Collexis partnered during the past year to create a powerful tool that lets you quickly and effectively identify 1,500 UM biomedical faculty by their area of proficiency.Instead of searching multiple department web pages for faculty information, users are searching Collexis, a one-stop resource to locate potential multidisciplinary team members, collaborators or mentors, at the University of Miami and throughout the world.
Collexis draws upon UM faculty publications from PubMed (the past 20 years) and NIH-funded research projects to automatically create and update dynamic faculty profiles. Faculty can input their own CV data into their profile to reflect areas of expertise not documented by PubMed citations or grant records. Collexis also incorporates a free, literature-based, scientific, social network tool of 1.5 million researchers worldwide.
Collexis consists of Researcher Profiles, Institutional Dashboard and BiomedExperts. Search yourself at https://research.miami.edu/profiles and typing in your name.

PubGet ( http://miami.pubget.com/) is a search engine for PDFs of the biomedical literature, similar to PubMed and Google Scholar, but with a great twist! What makes PubGet special is that you can also easily browse the latest issue of your favorite journals, article by article, when you go to PubGet from a computer on the UM/JMH network.
The Library activated UM as a PubGet site, so the PDFs of articles in the current issues of journals can be browsed, and the 20 million PubGet articles that are in journals accessible at UM can be searched. You can enter a journal title in the search box below ‘Latest Issues’ or you can customize the list of journals you see when you log in by clicking on ‘customize list’ and entering your MIT user name and password or Google account information.
More information on PubGet is available at the ‘help’ link on the top, right of the PubGet web site, and by coming to the Library.
