The current issue of Academic Medicine contains essays responding to the American Association of Medical Colleges (AAMC) 2011 question of the year "What improvements in medical education will lead to better health for individuals and populations?" The response written by Dr Mary Moore, Chair of the Department of Health Informatics and Executive Director of the Calder Memorial Library, on behalf of the Association of American Health Sciences Libraries, was accepted for inclusion in the issue. Her article, entitled Teaching Physicians to Make Informed Decisions in the Face of Uncertainty: Librarians and Informaticians on the Health Care Team, addresses the role librarians play in the health care team and led to an invitation to Dr Moore to present at the AAMC conference this weekend. Read this article and more, ranging from translational science implications to personalized medicine, in the November issue, which is available to both subscribers and non-subscribers.

Are you looking for the reports from the most influential conferences? The Calder Library is featuring a temporary trial of MD Conference Express, where you have access to peer-reviewed conference highlights reports.

With travel funds decreasing across the nation, it may not be possible to attend every conference. To keep up-to-date you can check out the highlights reports from conferences such as the American College of Cardiology, the American Diabetes Association, the American Psychiatric Association, and more. The MD Conference Express team works with the conference steering committees to select which topics will have an immediate impact on a clinician's practice. Medical writers then create highlights reports using primary source data. The researchers who presented the live talks are invited to review these reports and provide feedback to ensure accuracy. The e-book versions of the reports allow users the ability to electronically browse and even search for particular authors, institutions, and topics. In our ongoing efforts to enhance and improve services to our users, we have implemented a new and improved federated search engine, 360 Search. The simple search interface unifies results for e-journals, e-books, and other library materials. It then sorts thousands of results into clusters that make it easy to cut through clutter and find meaningful content. Just type your topic in the search box in the upper-left hand corner of the homepage, and you will see your search results organized by topic, source, and more.

360 Search

We have also created custom search categories which are targeted towards our main user groups. Subject searching can be found on the following portals listed on our website:  Students, Consumer Health, Physicians/Clinicians, and Researchers.

Users can now find answers faster by eliminating information overload as 360 Search provides a quick, intuitive path to results that share common topics, dates, journals, and authors. Also, there is a seamless integration to full-text, whereby users are presented with links to the full-text articles based on our subscriptions. In addition, patrons are now able to export selected citations to any bibliographic citation manager (like RefWorks) or email selected citations in either plain text or HTML.

UTD has added more psychiatry and dermatology content, geriatrics and general surgery specialty resources will be available soon.

It is only because of the strong support of the Dean, the guidance of Medical Education, the advocacy of clinical faculty, residents, students and nurses, the flexibility of UTD, and extensive negotiation that the Miller School of Medicine was able to reinstate this valuable resource.
