Thank you to all who have been supporting the Calder Library's book sale. Thanks to your generosity, we have raised $1098 which has been donated to United Way. What a great way to start the new year!
The book sale is still going on and everything has been discounted! All books are now only $1. Books that were previously only $1 are now 50 cents. So come to the library and take advantage of this sale!

The Calder Library would like to wish the students, faculty, researchers, staff, and their families a very Happy Thanksgiving! The library will be closed in celebration of Thanksgiving on Thursday, the 25th, and Friday, the 26th. Normal library hours will resume on Saturday, the 27th. The UMH Library will be closed on Thursday, but open on Friday morning from 8:30-12. In the meantime, don't forget to get a head start on your holiday shopping at our Annual Book Sale. Come celebrate with us!
MeSH (Medical Subject Headings), created by the National Library of Medicine, has been the worldwide standard subject authority for bibliographic control for 50 years. MeSH terms and the capabilities their hierarchy permit made MEDLINE the first and, to this day, one of the most effective databases in the world. Join the Health Informatics Faculty and the Calder Memorial Library in celebrating its 50th Anniversary.
The National Library of Medicine’s celebratory broadcast will be received in the third floor electronic classroom on November 18, 2010 from 2:00-3:30pm. All are welcome to attend.
The speaker will be Dr. Robert M. Braude, who received his Masters of Library Science in 1964 from UCLA and attended MEDLARS training at the National Library of Medicine in 1965. His talk reflects his 45 professional years with MeSH. He received a Ph.D. from the University of Nebraska in 1987, he was director of three academic health science libraries, and he served on many NLM Committees and Panels such as IAMS Review Committees, the Planning Panels on Medical Informatics, NLM Outreach Programs, and the Biomedical Library Review Committee. He is a Fellow of the Medical Library Association and of the American College of Medical Informatics.

We are pleased to announce that the UMH Library is now staffed by librarians Jenny Garcia-Barcena and Emily Vardell. To continue to bring UMH access to the best evidence-based resources and tools to support health care decisions, Jenny and Emily are at the UMH Library from 8:30 to 12, Monday to Friday, and at the UM Calder Memorial Library from 12 to 5. Since June 1st, the library has seen an increase in visitors, as well as an increase in the number of article and expert search requests. In addition to free article delivery and expert searches, the library also offers access to top medical databases and journals, customized email alerts sent to you on the author or topic of your choice, and individualized classes for all UMH health care professionals. Please come and visit the library soon to find out about the many free information resources and services available to UMH health care professionals and researchers.

Did you know the Calder Library has more than just books, journals, study rooms, lounge chairs, and quiet space for you to use? We know how much time you spend here at the library, and we want to make it a convenient place for you to study and conduct research.
Maybe you're using your iPhone or Droid to search something quickly, and you realize you've run out of battery. Time to panic? Not at the library! We now have a universal charger that will work for cell phones, digital cameras, and bluetooth devices. Our charger power pack can even charge up to two devices at once and comes with six adapters to accommodate a variety of devices. Make sure to stop by the Reference and Circulation desk the next time you're in a bind.
Maybe you come to the library during your lunch hour, hoping to look for a few articles, and you realize all the computers are being used. Or maybe you'd just like to be able to read in a lounge chair, and you forgot to bring your laptop. No need to worry! The library has five laptops available for you to check out. Simply come to the Reference and Circulation Desk with an ID, and we'll be happy to loan you one of our laptops for a minimum of two hours. It's that easy!

On December 10th, the Calder Library hosted the 10th Biennial Gross Lecture.

The lecture, entitled "Medical Knowledge in the IT Era" was presented by Dr Pascal J. Goldschmidt, Senior Vice-President for Medical Affairs and Dean of the Miller School of Medicine and CEO of UHealth.
The lecture was introduced by Dr. Mary Moore, Professor and Chair of the Department of Medical Library and Biomedical Communciations, who provided a short history of the Gross Lecture.
She was then followed by Dr. Roger Medel (Board of Trustee and Chair, Medical Faculty Affairs Committee), who introduced Dean Goldschmidt, tying in both Dean Goldschmidt's interests and Dr. Moore's Gross Lecture history.
Dean Goldschmidt's presentation focused on the connection between medical services and technological evolutions, highlighting the importance of the upcoming electronic health record, Epic, which will be installed at the UHealth System starting next year.
He concluded by highlighting many of the library's resources which directly relate to increasing quality of patient care. The lecture finished with a presentation of a gift from the Calder Library and an invitation to the reception, complete with hors d'oeuvres and holiday treats. Dean Goldschmidt's overview was supplemented during the reception by Calder Library faculty, each providing in-depth demonstrations of a strong collection of electronic resources.
The lecture was a resounding success, with over 150 people in attendance and many people staying until 7 pm, enjoying delicious refreshments and stimulating conversation.
Here's to future collaborations between the Calder Library and health care providers in this new era of patient care!
