Deans First Faculty Open House

More than 150 faculty enjoyed and benefitted from the Deans Faculty Open House on December 12, 2008. Following a welcome by Dean Pascal Goldschmidt and Library Director Mary Moore, faculty saw, many for the first time, the extensive revitalization of the Librarys interior and exterior accomplished during 2008. Although highlights of the revitalization have appeared in issues of this newsletter, the overall effect of a bright, beautiful and welcoming Library, with a wide array of areas for study, informatics training and assistance, meetings and relaxation, is best appreciated with a visit.

The new Library is also a very supportive facility for faculty to visit with and learn what friends and colleagues are doing and to explore possible collaborations. Finding collaborators within the University and throughout the world is the focus of Collexis, one of the new databases demonstrated by a Collexis representative during the reception that will soon be available.

Representatives of other new databases Isabel, QUOSA, Scopus and the new UpToDate subscription at the University of Miami Hospital demonstrated the unique and powerful capabilities of these resources. Posters of resources for clinicians, researchers and educators and presentations on the renovation project and new community service initiative were available.

If you were unable to attend the Open House, please take a moment to visit with us. To arrange for a brief tour and/or a demonstration of one of the new databases, please contact Joaquin (Joe) Arriaga at jarriaga@med.miami.edu/305-243-6648.

"I just wanted to take a moment to thank you and your team for maintaining such a helpful, friendly and useful operation at the Louis Calder Memorial Library. Your staff couldnt be better, and I especially want to recognize Tanya Feddern and Jenny Garcia-Barcena for their exceptional service. They have both regularly and eagerly made the time and effort to teach me how to better search and more efficiently manage my efforts. What a pleasure!"
Keith Harrison Rubin, M.D.

"In preparation for the American College of Gastroenterology meeting, it was really a pleasure working with Jose de Leon in creating several posters for presentation. He was easy to work with, extremely professional, and really exemplifies what it means to be a model employee here at the University of Miami. He was able to coordinate the work within a specific tight timeframe in addition to the myriads of other projects that had rapidly approaching deadlines as well."
