Medical Students Hail New Reading Room as a �Perfect Venue�

On March 10, 2003, the Emanuel M. Papper, M.D. History of Medicine Room on the third floor of the library was opened for patron use and hailed by the first student users as a 'perfect venue' for serious study and scholarship.

Beginning in July, 2002, the original room, including the ceiling and lighting, was completely renovated and reappointed at Dean Clarkson's request. There are now 60 comfortable solid cherry chairs at 12 tables and eight leather upholstered wing back chairs in two seating arrangements. Four of the tables that seat six are also equipped with table lighting and connections for high speed Internet access for personal laptop computers.

The custom-made cherry bookcases, manufactured by Worden, bring 1,100 running feet of new shelving for the Library's historical collections, which grew significantly during the past ten years and which continue to grow rapidly, due in large part to the extraordinary generosity of Dr. Martin B. Raskin and to the Library's three named collections: the W.A.D. Anderson, D. Ralph Millard, M.D., and the Augusta and Leon Schiff collections.

Millard Society Makes Pledge to Endowment Fund

On March 15, Dr. Paul Howard, President of the Millard Society, visited the Library and viewed the newly arranged D. Ralph Millard, M.D. plastic surgery collection in the History of Medicine Reading Room. Library Director Henry L. Lemkau, Jr. was pleased to accept the first annual gift of $10,000 toward the Society's pledge of $50,000 for the D. Ralph Millard Endowment fund. Upon completion of this pledge, the endowment will have received in excess of $100,000 to ensure the continued preservation of and access to the collection and the Millard website at calder.med.miami.edu/Ralph_Millard/.

RefWorks Bibliography Manager Now Freely Accessible University-wide

All faculty, staff and students can now easily create personal bibliographic databases by using RefWorks to import references from text files, such as EndNote and Reference Manager, and online databases, such as Ovid and PubMed. References in the personal databases can then be formatted in seconds, and you can search your database by author, descriptor, and index.

Supported by the Otto G. Richter Library, RefWorks is accessible University-wide at www.refworks.com/refworks, or, for medical campus users, at the 'Electronic Databases and Information Sources' link on Calder's website. Off-campus access is also available via the 'Remote Access' link, near the bottom of the "Quick Links" frame of the website.

A simple registration and a one-page instruction sheet on the RefWorks site will let you get started immediately. New DVD Production Services Available

Medical Television is pleased to announce the acquisition of a new digital video editing system capable of producing high quality video for DVD. This addition was in response to the expanding use of the DVD format in presenting video programs and client requests for the DVD format. Programs can also be produced on video CDs and CD-ROMs for use in PowerPoint™ presentations.

Using its new DVD capability, Medical Television, working with the Department of Epidemiology, produced programs in English and Spanish that urge young gay Hispanic men to practice safe sex and to be tested for HIV. The videos were distributed on DVD for use in an interactive computer assisted program.
